Water
Guinea pigs should always be supplied with a fresh, clean source of water daily; which should be readily available at all
times. Ensure water is changed daily to prevent algae growth and promote a healthy supply of water.
Water should be pure, do not include additives in their water as this may change the taste causing your cavy to drink less.
It is a common misconception that adding vitamin C drops to your guinea pigs drinking water will ensure they obtain their
recommended daily intake. This is not the case. Always supply fresh vegetables and fruits as this is the natural, healthy
way to obtain the necessary vitamins and minerals they require.
Bottles and Bowls
An excellent way to supply water to your guinea pig is via a water bottle attached to their cage. Water bottles come in
various shapes and sizes but should always include a solid sipper tube and ball bearing that cannot become detached
from the actual bottle. Clear water bottles may also be a better investment as you can adequately see how much your
guinea pig is drinking, and when it may be time to refill. Always check the quality of any water bottle you purchase.
Water bowls are also another option that can be used in conjunction with bottles. A heavy ceramic bowl which cannot be
easily tipped over is best. Some guinea pigs may find it much easier to drink from a bowl compared to a bottle, however
bowls will require frequent rinsing and cleaning as they may become soiled. Always include a water bottle in your cavies
cage if you do decide to include a bowl as this will provide them with an alternate water supply.
Cleaning
Clean your bottles and bowls to prevent algae growth and promote health. Water bottles can be cleaned using a stiff bottle
brush. Cleaning should be done once a week or as required. Always clean thoroughly in the lid and spout.
Rice is another useful tool to aid in cleaning bottles. Place a few teaspoons in your bottle with a small amount of water and
close the lid. Shake vigorously for a few minutes. The water should turn a milky white. Empty the rice and rinse the bottle
with clean water thoroughly. The rice acts as a sponge, scraping the dirt from the inside of the bottle and lid.
Bowls should always be rinsed daily and scrubbed to remove debris.
