Lucerne Lucerne is a legume hay and is often used in Australia due to its high adaptability to harsh dry conditions. This makes it a sustainable fodder for grazing animals and domesticated herbivores such as guinea pigs. We ensure our Lucerne is prime: “Prime hay is the classification given to hay that has good green colour, plenty of intact leaf, and relatively fine soft stems. It may contain up to 10% of other plant material, such as grass, but should be free of prohibited weeds and mould, fungi, or weather damage.” (Hay There Volume 2) Lucerne can be provided to: Young Guinea Pigs: Up to 6 months of age. Lucerne is much higher in calcium and protein which helps promote strong bones, muscle and teeth in the early developing stages of your guinea pigs life. It also provides essential fibre, for healthy gut mobility and digestion. At 6 months of age slowly start introducing Grass Hay such as Meadow hay into the diet. Pregnant and Nursing Guinea Pigs: With additional benefits of a higher crude protein and calcium content Lucerne is essential to ensuring your guinea pig is provided with the increased concentrated nutrition needed during pregnancy or whilst lactating. Lucerne can also be provided in small quantities to mature guinea pigs as a treat only. We suggest Sweet Meadow Hay for the adult guinea pigs nutritional needs. A diet too high in calcium in mature cavies can result in bladder stone formation.
